Family owned and operated. Smolka Co. Inc. was founded in 1904 by Edward Smolka. In 1917 Smolka was joined by his son Mortimer, and later another son, Irving. When the elder Smolka died in 1947, Mortimer became president and Irving vice president.

In 1973 Mortimer Smolka died. The business transitioned to the Bonsignore family. The Bonsignore family was in the amusement–ride business in Coney Island. John Bonsignore had acquired an extensive background in real estate while working in the family business. One of the buildings he owned and maintained was “The Silver Baths,” in its day a famous Turkish bath house. The knowledge John Bonsignore had from personally maintaining the plumbing of the bath house he carried to Smolka Co. Inc.

The current 1200 square foot showroom is conveniently located in midtown Manhattan, at 231 East 33 Street, in a multi-story townhouse. The warehouse, located minutes away in the Bronx, at 450 Timpson Street, was opened in 1983 and contains 35,000 square feet with additional out door yard space. The product line is a quality selection of kitchen and bath fixtures and fittings.

John Bonsignore is at the helm of Smolka Co. Inc. business with its active to-the-trade operation and the up-to-the-minute, ever-changing retail arm of the business, which attracts shoppers from the Greater New York City Metropolitan area.

John Bonsignore, Jr. is Smolka Co. Inc. President and a member of the showroom team, which includes a cadre of knowledgeable, accommodating professionals.

Suzette Bonsignore is manager of Smolka Co. Inc.'s product-filled showroom, which showcases a diverse selection of exciting and technically advanced imported and domestic products: sleek, European-styled Aquatic whirlpool baths; aristocratic British ceramic accessories from Samuel Heath; high-performance, designer toilets from Toto; inspired faucets from Dornbracht; and Bianchini & Capponi vanities, each one an Italian work of art to name but a few of hundreds of items on display.

The bulk of Smolka Co. Inc.'s inventory is stored in the Bronx warehouse, since traffic congestion in Manhattan makes receiving and shipping of trailer loads impractical. Inventory for the showroom, on East 33rd Street, is replenished on an as-needed basis.
